Oregon bottle deposit to increase to 10 cents in April 2017

The deposit on a recyclable bottle or can is going up to 10 cents effective April 1, 2017, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission said. That ought to delight Seinfeld fans who enjoyed Kramer and Newman's plot to drive a truckload of cans to Michigan. But the increase, mandated by Oregon law, indicates the redemption rate in Oregon has fallen short of goals. In 2014, Oregonians redeemed 68.26 percent of recyclable cans sold. In 2015, the rate fell to 64.45 percent. An Oregon law passed in 2011 calls for the 5 cent deposit to double to 10 cents if the return rate falls below 80 percent for 2 consecutive years. “We have many partners in the beverage, retail, and recycling industries,” says Steve Marks, OLCC Executive Director. “We will be working with our partners over the next eight months to make this transition as smooth as possible for consumers and industry employees.”
